Magdalene College Cambridge and Corpus Christi College Oxford are going head-to-head in the second round of the student quiz show hosted by Jeremy Paxman. Both teams will be racking their brains to get through to the quarter finals, but have you ever wondered how the contestants get there in the first place?
Infamously, Cambridge and Oxford put forward not just one team each, but as many as they have colleges: 31 in the East. According to previous winner Sean Blanchflower - who won the competition for Trinity College Cambridge in - the production company contacts every Student Union president at the University inviting them to submit a team.
How they do so was, at least in the nineties, riddled with irregularity. We suspect the process has tightened up in recent years, and most presidents choose to organise a selection quiz in their colleges, looking to pick the four smartest entrants.
