First off, congrats to Michelle. Her service and successes with the school board certainly make her deserving of that seat on council. But with the vacancy, the job of naming a replacement went to remaining school board members. What they meant, like it or not, was that they wanted a conservative, of their liking, appointed.
School board positions, like council seats, are supposed to be non-partisan, meaning you run as a candidate and not as a Republican or Democrat. At the same time, this same group recruited Phil Stemler , again, one of their approved conservatives, to run for the school board seat held by incumbent Carol Crane , which then somewhat forced Carol into the liberal camp, making her then having to fend off the claims to win reelection.
