A man was arrested on DUI and other charges on Sunday after crashing into a motorist on Route 8 in Waterbury, injuring four people, and driving off the highway and down an embankment. Emergency crews responded to reports of the crash at a. Callers told police the driver involved was traveling very fast and had gone down an embankment after rear-ending a vehicle. State police said troopers spoke with the two adults and two children in the vehicle that was struck, finding that they all suffered minor injuries.
They were taken to a local hospital for treatment. Troopers then found the driver of the car that went off the embankment. State police said he was identified as Joselito Santiago, Jr. Santiago did not suffer any injuries and was able to get out of his vehicle on his own. According to state police, Santiago was allegedly uncooperative and aggressive toward emergency crews, including firefighters and medics.
He allegedly tried to flee the scene on foot but was quickly apprehended by troopers. State police alleged that Santiago was unable to maintain his balance while walking up the embankment and nearly fell backwards multiple times.
Troopers claimed that they could smell alcohol coming from his breath. Santiago was asked to take field sobriety testing and initially was compliant. State police claimed that he refused to finish the first test and was arrested on charges of reckless driving, operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs and interfering with an officer. He was then held on a remand to custody order and was expected to go before a judge in Waterbury Superior Court on Monday.
