Wander through the historic streets of Shindagha district filled with artwork and installations, or dive into powerful solo exhibitions at Ayyam Gallery and Carbon 12 this month.
The most important literary event in the city is coming back for its 17th edition, presenting a diverse array of author talks, literary workshops, book signings, and special evening events. On the evenings of February 1st, there will be a theatrical evening of Arabic poetry, paying tribute to the late national poet of Syria, Nizar Qabbani, known for his passionate verses of love, women and nationhood.
In addition, Franco-Palestinian chef and author Fadi Kattan will take guests on a culinary journey of Palestinian cuisine in a unique banquet, merging dinner with conversation. The Iraqi-Dutch sculptor Athar Jaber is the latest artist that Ayyam Gallery has added to its roster of artists associated with the region.
In his first solo show at the gallery, Jaber, who was born in Rome and raised in Europe, will showcase a selection of haunting, disfigured statues made of Carrara marble. An event that attracts people of all ages, the edition will feature public art , art installations in old houses, a variety of workshops on latte art, bisque painting, hand-building tiles, as well as a display of pop-inspired murals, and food-and-beverage pop-ups. The exhibition will display a series of her powerful abstraction-meets-figuration paintings, tapping into themes of trauma, politics, and the subconscious.
Relinquishing herself into the process of painting, she loosens the constraints that anchor her life, allowing her gestures to be guided by intuition. This content can also be viewed on the site it originates from. Curated by Line Kouwatli, this exhibition features eight multidisciplinary artists from Syria, including photographer Ammar Abd Rabbo , painter Joumana Mortada , sculptor Issa Kazah , among others. Nearly two months after the demise of the Al-Assad regime, the show comes at a pivotal time of re-birth and freedom in Syria.
