To browse Academia. This paper is an examination of aprons during the long-seventeenth century, The study of dress history has traditionally examined mainly elite clothing, although this is changing. At least in part this vacuum has been caused by a perceived lack of source material, especially in terms of imagery and surviving garments, but there is a wealth of documentary and other material which can be mined for information.
Aprons are a garment that were worn by all social classes at some point in their lives, functioning as both a protective garment and, for those with some wealth, as a fashionable accessory or a symbol of status. The ownership, usages, prevalence, fabrics, colours and costs of aprons are described through their appearance in a range of sources, both in written records, such as wills and probates and in illustrations, ranging from woodcuts to portraits.
Changes in how the use of aprons as a fashionable garment waxed and waned are assessed. Aprons were also worn throughout the period by men in certain trades, for whom the protective element was important.
