Embarking on a semester abroad opens the door to new cultures, lifestyles, and perspectives. My experience in Bucharest, Romania, was no exception. At first, I was confronted with unfamiliar traditions and practices.
However, as time passed, I found myself adjusting to and embracing the unique aspects of life in this vibrant city. One of the striking features of Bucharest were the thriving shops and stores. Unlike my hometown in Vorarlberg, Austria, where stores close early, Bucharest's shops remained open until PM, even on Sundays. This exciting difference showed me that the city was all about making things easy, encouraging people to go out and explore shops, markets, and cafes even late at night.
This added a vibrant and energetic feeling to the city. Another thing that became familiar during my time abroad was Bucharest's well-established transportation network. The efficient metro and tram systems connected the city seamlessly, highlighting the significance of sustainability and accessibility.
Due to heavy traffic in Bucharest, the public transportation system is crucial and highly effective. Living in a metropolis was an entirely new experience that I first needed to become acquainted with. The density of Bucharest's urban infrastructure differed from the peaceful landscapes of my hometown. The towering buildings, bustling streets, and vibrant neighborhoods highlighted the city's urban character.
This separation between the urban environment and the natural beauty of my homeland allowed me to appreciate the diverse facets of life and architecture in Bucharest.
