OK, the results are in from today's Firstbird survey. Thanks for the great turnout. We got well over sightings from all over. Glancing at the list, we see a lot of hummingbirds, jays, and believe it or not, Oak Titmouse. Very cool. This bird has been visiting my backyard all summer.
A survivor! Eurasian Collared-Dove in Barstow. Someday fall migration will start and I'll have something more interesting to report Geese, in a flying V, passing overhead by my window, and they were honking up a storm. Woke me up. From my back yard, doves, finches and mockingbirds. Live near a beach so down the street I get sea gulls, coots, egrets, ospreys, ducks, geese. I am a blessed woman! I heard some birds though, they are in the trees, and bushes trying to stay cool in the noon heat. I think I heard some mocking birds and a couple others not sure which kind. I think she's protecting a nest.
Has been chastising other birds for the last several days. OK, this was actually the LAST bird I saw two days ago, and the first bird I saw the next morning, but thought I'd mention it because it was so unusual: an osprey spent the night in a Norfolk Island pine near my house in Cardiff-by-the-Sea.
First one I've ever seen in my neighborhood in my 50 years, and more than a mile from the nearest source of fish San Elijo Lagoon. I suspect it was a juvenile looking for new territory. My "local birds of Santa Barbara County" chart didn't show them There are two that live here near my house. Urs them in the morning, sparrows all day, then black birds in the evening. Osprey overhead scanning the shallows for his breakfast.
