If someone is looking to break out of those networks -- including to meet new people -- it's generally done in NYC. People meet through friends, online, or in NYC. Serendipitously in NJ doesn't really happen. With all due respect, this sounds absolutely ridiculous to me. You guys make it sound as if people have a pre-determined number of people they allow themselves to socialize with on a regular basis and once they've reached that number, no one else is allowed in.
You can easily make new friends in NJ. Nobody has too many friends. As long as you share some things in common and you're not someone who typically has an issue socializing, you'll be fine. I literally have no idea what these people are talking about with their "social circles.
Why are you putting all these restrictions on how to meet people? I don't get why making friends through work who would introduce her to new people would be difficult. And also, do you think the people you find at bars in Hoboken and downtown JC are all residents there? People from all over northern NJ visit Hoboken. Do they become more approachable just by being in Hoboken than they would be if you met them in suburban NJ. I don't follow your logic.
But as you said, I guess you're speaking from your experiences. And don't get me wrong, I'm not suggesting your neighbors will welcome you by knocking on your door with a freshly baked apple pie. But that doesn't mean they won't be open to a new relationship. I will move to NJ before the end of the year. I will be working in Flanders and think about living in Morristown.
