City spokesperson Joshua Amukugo said they are determined to invest more in the use of technology to ensure that high-level safety prevails in the City.
There are currently 64 cameras installed at public places in Windhoek and close to at municipal offices and premises, while a further 25 cameras will be installed before June. These sites include major shopping centres, traffic intersections, most of the central business district, as well as tourist attractions around the City. Weekly operational statistics indicate that property-related crimes have now migrated to residential areas, the central business district periphery and other areas not monitored.
Amukugo said the City plans to extend the installation of cameras to other public places that are affected by crime. He said criminals have now changed the areas they are targeting because of the CCTV cameras.
Amukugo stressed that CCTV as a crime prevention measure forms part of the larger integrated crime prevention and road safety system, and is very effective and properly maintained by a dedicated team. According to him more than 20 applications were received, including from local, regional and international companies. Following a thorough selection process, one company was chosen and commenced with the project.
