Our last night in Cullera was spent chatting to a lovely family from Kinsale, Ireland who were parked in the next door pitch. They even treated us to a song which included some body percussion which was strangely wonderful and moving. Leaving them the next day we headed north along the Mediterranean Coast and randomly picked a town and campsite about 3 hours drive away for a one night stop. We had a large pitch high up above the sea with a sanitary block that rivalled our bathroom at home!
The campsite had a pool and restaurant and was right on the beach. A short walk around the beautiful bay took one to the various restaurants and bars scattered around a tiny harbour where we enjoyed a delicious lunchtime meal in the sunshine. Whilst here we achieved three things that we wanted to do before leaving Spain. These were; eat a plateful of good quality Iberico Ham with a cold glass of wine, enjoy a seafood Paella and have a swim in the sea!
Unusually for us we had booked our next campsite, as reviews had said how it was always busy and one needed to book, so reluctantly we had to leave this very special place and head north to Roses just south of the border with France. We were right to have booked as the whole time we were at the campsite it was full and each day there were motorhomes parked up outside overnight waiting for the chance of a vacant pitch.
All the gantries along the carriageway had signs warning of dangerous winds. Not far into our journey when all was quiet in the van as Richard was concentrating on driving in such difficult conditions and Annie was fretting! This resulted in a quick repair job with Duct Tape in hurricane conditions and Annie holding onto the roof light to stop it blowing away as Richard worked on the problem.
The high winds did not abate after we arrived at our campsite in Roses and it was 3 days before we could put our outside furniture or awning out. That said we had a happy time, 5 nights in total, enjoying the holiday atmosphere of the campsite and nearby town. We also witnessed a major boules competition that ran for three days and attracted quite a crowd — a bit odd we thought for Spain!
