With several held each term, the free and public Talks series at the Alexander Studios, which is organized by the SCA Visual Art area, features curators, international and local artists, both distinguished and emerging, and other cultural producers presenting on their practices, projects, and ideas.
The series is a productive, less formal occasion for working artists and students to discuss their methods and concepts and to explore the contexts and theories of contemporary art while also engaging with visual culture in a broader way. Francisco Berlanga is a Vancouver based textile artist whose practice reflects on his relationship to his Mexican identity as a second-generation immigrant through the lens of Craft. He attempts to understand how one can inhabit a culture while being partially absent from it.
His practice engages with concepts of inaccessibility attempting to bridge the gaps between his personal and cultural identities by forcing connections between them and trying to understand the limitations that these identities impose upon each other. Histories of repetition often produce apparitions of motifs that haunt his works. She holds an MFA in Curatorial Practice and Museum studies, working across the disciplines of art making, curating and writing.
Walter Scott b. His comic series, Wendy , chronicles the continuing misadventures of a young artist in a satirical version of the contemporary art world. Jaalen Edenshaw is a Haida artist most known for his monumental sculpture in red cedar. Jaalen is also skilled in creating bentwood boxes, masks, copper shields, prints and dug out canoes.
Gwaai Edenshaw is a Haida artist known primarily for his metalwork. He also works with a variety of media including bone, slate, and wood. Alongside being an illustrator, Gwaai also has a passion for story and language. Along with a life of learning from his father, Guujaaw, Gwaai was also trained by Bill Reid.
