I would like to stay away from this type of area as far as hotel is concerned.

There are too many other nicer areas of Paris to stay. Red lights, XXX, etc. Right bank the Seine dividing Paris is usually more expensive than left bank. Generally speaking, city center is very safe. I personally prefer 6e St. I really like Grand Hotel de l'Univers 6 r. Any of the lower s along the river, 1,4,5,6,7 are not only near the sights but as safe as you can get. Like the previous posting, I definitely would not stay in the Clichy area and as a female traveling alone,I never felt secure in the other north Paris areas like the train station areas of Gare du Nord and Gare de l'Est.
However, I liked the more southwest train area Gare Montparnasse and stayed there frequently. Good luck. I read somewhere that the 18th, 19th, and 20th arrondisments could be a bit iffy on safety, at least at night. All of the standard guidebooks comment on areas and don't recommend hotels in really bad places, and they often describe why areas are bad eg, Gustafson's books; Eyewitness doesn't say much but won't recommend hotels in bad areas.
