One of the most destructive blazes, the Friars Fire, spread quickly across the steep hillside near Fashion Valley Mall, forcing evacuations and damaging multiple condominium units.
Tina Burrell was at work when the fire broke out, but her daughter was inside their rental condo. Video from inside the home shows the extent of the devastation. Burrell, her adult daughter and her son lost everything. Burrell acknowledged the irony that the fire that displaced her may have been caused by individuals experiencing homelessness.
Mark Polinsky, whose condo was also damaged, said he has repeatedly voiced concerns to city officials about homeless encampments in Mission Valley.
Residents say they sympathize with the homeless but worry about the potential for more fires. Geo, who had to evacuate during the Friars Fire, believes a long-term solution is necessary. Burrell agrees. She launched a GoFundMe campaign to help her family find permanent housing. Fire investigators are still working to determine what specifically ignited the fires.
