Peter Batten, 55, set fire to a paint tray and tried to open the door at the constituency office of David Torrance in Kirkcaldy. The MSP arrived to see Batten walk away with the burning tray. Batten threatened Mr Torrance, who pressed a panic button. In a previous incident, workers had barricaded themselves in a back office and called the police. Batten wanted his name taken off the sex offenders register, Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court heard. Batten returned on April 14, when he tried to set fire to the premises, tried to open the door, shouted and threatened violence against Mr Torrance. He also admitted charges of shouting and making abusive comments to police officers, threatening them and struggling with them. Sheriff Robert More jailed Batten for 22 months, backdated to May 20 when he was remanded in custody, and also imposed a five-year non-harassment order banning him from entering the office.
