Ottawa, May The hopper's leaps across the Prairies on his mission of destruction are no more lively than the witty sallies which passed across the floor of the House of Commons last night between Prime Minister It. Bennett and Hon. Motherwell, former Liberal Minister of Agriculture, and the poisoned bait used to combat the pest carried no more venom than some of the words exchanged. Motherwell started off by condemning the Government for cutting down agriculture estimates when a vote for the administration of the Destructive Insect Pests Act was before the House.
He accused the Government of doing nothing in the face of the worst grasshopper plague the country has ever bad. He explained the Dominion Government had met every request made by the provinces for assistance in fighting the grasshoppers. Mothex-well and other western members showed little gratitude for what Eastern Canada had done.
Nova Scotia had grasshoppers forty years ago and they did not come to the Dominion Government for help to kill them, put in Col. Thomas Catley, Conservative, Pic-tou. The clash subsided almost as quickly as it arose. Apart from this skirmish the House was in an agreeable mood and voted large sums of money in estimates for a number of departments.
The Labor Department votes were all approved and numerous miscellaneous items carried. Next Tuesday the House will tsage its long-expected debate on sweepstakes. Party lines will be withdrawn for the occasion. Two lottery bills are on the. One, already passed by the Senate, would authorize lotteries for the aid of hospitals; and the other, recently introduced, would authorize them for educational and charitable purposes generally.
