The family had been just five minutes from their San Carlos, California , home when Morales careered into their Chevrolet Bolt after being involved in a street race.
Orphaned in the blink of an eye, their aunt Liza Spiridon and her husband Jeff Hodde stepped up to the plate and took the two under their wing. They would also avoided driving near the scene of the crash incase of triggers, but police cars, fire trucks, fires and sirens were harder to escape. Liza told the outlet: 'We're the second set of parents. It's kind of like, 'You have your parents in heaven, and you have us now. As the grieved their parents deaths, the family had the painstaking process of two criminal cases moving slowly through the courts. The two cases were against Morales who last month was sentenced to 90 days of electronic home monitoring with his parents, after being incarcerated in a Juvenile Hall since the deaths.
