Traditional Local. Since Gabrek has been the oasis of the traditional continental Croatian cuisine. It is rustically decorated, with a charm of the old taverns often frequented by eminent personalities, whose numerous photos hang on the wall. Some of recipes of the dishes they serve today are dating back many decades.
Gabrek is among the few restaurants where you can eat traditional specialties such as sweetbread and tripe, as well as homemade cornbread. Their thick and aromatic soup made from various mushrooms is fantastic just like the stuffed veal breast. In the winter season, we recommend the excellent cooked pork shank with sauerkraut and mashed potatoes. The portion is enough for two people, and the taste is excellent. The food in Gabrek is extremely tasty, but we were impressed by the the staff: sincere, caring and cordial from the moment that we arrived and parked our car until we left the restaurant.
The restaurant Giaxa is located in the very centre of the town of Hvar, in a beautiful and elegantly restored Gothic palace from the 15th century, with original stone columns and arches and a beautiful court. A friendly staff will guide you to your table. It is especially magical to stay here in the evening when you can enjoy the atmosphere of Hvar, avoiding in the same time the crowds of tourists on the nearby streets. During the season, Giaxa offers a special lunch menu, so be sure to ask the staff to show it to you.
Their risotto with prawns is excellent, an island version of risotto Milanese with saffron. Although they always have fresh fish, try the gnocchi with lamb stew. The lamb goulash with juicy and soft pieces of meat delighted us in combination with homemade gnocchi.
Among the main dishes, we decided on sea bass with a classic French beurre blanc sauce and grilled vegetables.
