The program will allow students who graduated from their psychiatry residency to specialize in providing mental health services to those in the criminal justice system. Nancy Trevino, Ph. That means a person who committed a crime would be evaluated to see if mental health challenges played a role and determine if they need treatment.
The program, part of the Texas Tech Health Sciences Center, trains newly-graduated psychiatrists to address these problems in hopes of promoting rehabilitation rather than punishment. The program would work with people in the Lubbock County Detention Center and the Juvenile Justice Center, but it has to be approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education in February before it can be implemented. Trevino, along with the community leaders and organizations who helped build this plan, hopes this can provide mental health services in order to prevent deeper justice system involvement.
