This handsome Victorian viaduct rises to 75 feet almost 23 metres above the Darent Valley in Lullingstone Lane, Eynsford, Kent and still carries the busy lines from London to Sevenoaks and beyond. There are nine brick arches and the whole is capped with a stone balustrade.
It was built for the independent Sevenoaks Railway Company and opened in June As it was under construction in many of the workers involved are recorded in the census returns for Eynsham. These are the people with the picks and shovels, the wheelbarrows, horses and gunpowder, who built the line and the viaduct under extremely hard and dangerous circumstances. They usually go unacknowledged, so I thought it would be a fitting tribute to their efforts to look at their age and place of birth where known and I have named them below.
