Since industrialization, the relationship between technological change and work structures has been a complex one whose implications have been frequently described and interpreted. With regard to the deep influence of technology on work structures, the discussion is still characterized by the work of Karl Marx, who studied the emergence of industrial work under the influence of mechanical engineering.
This description has barely lost any of its relevance to date, but has been further developed under the impression of the enhancement and penetration of new technologies in different sectors of society, including the service sectors.
In particular, the innovative power of information and communication technologies and the widespread introduction of the Internet have changed the working structures in all sectors and branches. Additionally, there has been a growth of knowledge-intensive industries, a deepening of globalization trends, and the worldwide networking of socio-technical systems such as production, logistics , which have also greatly changed the forms of work worldwide.
Today, these processes of change can hardly be described in a causal model of the relationship between technical innovations and labour structures, but require new conceptual approaches. Against the background of the continuous automation of work, relevant issues of humanity and the social compatibility of work structures as well as the increasing debate on ethically oriented conditions of work in highly industrialized societies are considered.
