New England Patriots safety Jabrill Peppers is expected back on the stand Friday after his domestic violence trial started Thursday with a woman testifying that he grabbed her by the neck, slammed her against the wall, and pushed her down the stairs. Peppers admitted to having cocaine on the night of his 29th birthday , clearing that charge through an agreement with prosecutors in Quincy District Court before testimony began.
Peppers is also charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. The woman told the court that Peppers attacked her after another man called her cellphone several times while they were in bed. The defense played cellphone videos recorded by Peppers in the moments after the alleged domestic violence.
According to the defense, the woman refused to leave that night after he asked her 20 times to do so and claims she had no significant injuries. Peppers was arrested at his Braintree apartment in October He remains on the Patriots roster but now faces an uncertain future. He will remain on probation because of the drug charge and will also need to remain drug-free with screenings by the NFL substance abuse program.
